In collaboration with the
International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP);
ORCID
Sri Lanka Forum of Medical Editors (SLFOME)
DAY1: 15 OCTOBER 2016: VENUE – CIDDER 10.30 am - Session 1: SLJOL and the Journals Online Project, Illegitimate Journals and the evaluation of the JOL journals
Sioux Cumming
Programme Manager, Journals Online, INASP,
UK
INASP has been supporting the production, dissemination and use of local research since 1992 and it began its support for the Sri Lanka Journals Online project in 2008. This session will review the objectives and progress of the JOL project and specifically SLJOL. It will also examine the rising problem illegitimate journals and conferences and their implications for both journal editors and researchers.
Who is this for?
The session is of interest to journal editors who are interested in increasing the visibility of their journals, and it is also relevant to authors who want to have their research published in easily accessible, relevant and reputable journals.11.30 am - Session 2: ORCID (Part 1): How to stand out from the crowd with your unique identifier

Do you have a common name that often causes your academic work to be mixed up with someone else’s in databases? Do you use many researcher profile services which you need to update constantly, taking away your precious time from your research? ORCID (Open Researcher & Contributor ID) is a persistent, unique identifier that you can use throughout your academic career. More than 2 million researchers have registered for an iD that helps distinguish them from others, and correctly link their academic work and contributions. Join this presentation to find out how.
Who is this for?
If you wish to build your academic career by explicitly and correctly connecting your name, researcher profile and all of your work, then you should attend. Researchers who are active in their research will learn how to auto-update their publication lists and save time by using ORCID in manuscript submission processes. Senior researchers who already have a number of publications can also take advantage of ORCID to clean up the mess in databases by giving explicit connections between those publications and their ORCID record.
Why should you attend?
Science, PLOS, IEEE, and other distinguished international journals are starting to mandate ORCID when you submit your manuscripts. This session will give you a quick understanding on what ORCID is, how to use it, and why.12.30 pm - Lunch
01.30 pm - Session 3: ORCID (Part 2): How to maintain your ORCID recordNobuko Miyairi, MLIS
Regional Director, Asia Pacific
ORCID
Singapore
Signing up for an ORCID iD is easy and quick - but what about maintaining your ORCID record? Do you have too many publications to link to? Do you want to keep some information private but still want to show your academic achievements publicly? Is there anyone who can help to keep your ORCID record up to date? The session will illustrate how to maintain your ORCID record through a live demonstration. Attendees are welcome to bring their own laptops to gain hands on experiences.
Who is this for?
Anyone who wishes to learn how to maintain their ORCID record, and learn what options are available for building their online CV to source other services. Those who do not have an ORCID iD will have an opportunity to do so during the session (bring your own laptop). Attending the first part of this session is not mandatory but ideal.03.00 pm - Tea
03.30 pm - Session 4: Kudos and how authors can promote their own work. Digital Object Identifiers what they are and how to use themSioux Cumming
Programme Manager, Journals Online, INASP
UK
INASP has recently partnered with Kudos which is a free service through which you can broaden readership and increase the impact of your research. Kudos is more than a just a networking site, and more than just a publication listing. It is a toolkit for explaining your work in plain language and for enriching it with links to related materials.
Digital Object Identifiers are vital to maintain the links to research articles on the internet, but editors and researchers need to understand how they work in order to maintain this unbroken record.
Who should attend?
This session is aimed specifically at authors who want to take an active role in promoting their research and sharing it with new audiences. However, it is also of interest to editors who can help their authors to increase the reach of their research.05.00 pm - Close
DAY2: 16 OCTOBER 2016: VENUE – CIDDER 08.30 am - Session 5: Some perspectives on publishing in medical journals (Part 1)
It is understood that publications in medical journals constitute the published public record. Medical journals are expected to conform to International Publication Standards and those working in these journals are constantly striving very hard to meet these requirements. They expect authors and reviewers to try their best to comply with these standards when articles are submitted and reviewed. There are certain expectations of journals and editors that need to be fulfilled in the entire process of publication of articles in medical journals. There are several types of medical journal publication formats. Each of these models has its own merits and disadvantages. A growing concern among researchers, reviewers and medical journal editors is compliance with research integrity and all types of research misconduct. One component of this, plagiarism, is a problem encountered by all medical journals. All these issues will be addressed in the presentations.
Learning objectives/Attendee benefits:
There will be researchers who are presenting their work at the conference and potential researchers who would attend the conference. They will benefit from these erudite presentations by experienced Medical Journal Editors. It will be a learning experience on how articles are assessed and decisions are made regarding acceptance or otherwise. It will go a long way in helping researchers to publish their work.
Target audience:
All researchers and potential researchers who wish to publish in Medical Journals and early career journal editors.

01.00 pm - Session 7: Copyright issues, permissions and licenses (Part 1)Sioux Cumming
Programme Manager, Journals Online, INASP
UK
There will be a short explanation of copyright and its implications for journal editors and authors. This will lead into the need for clear licenses for the use of the content in open access journals. Although content may be ‘free-to-read’ it is important for journal editors to state clearly how readers, researchers and text mining services can use the content. The Creative Commons licenses will be explained in this context.03.00 pm - Tea
03.30 pm - Session 8: Indexing services – if you can’t be found, you don’t exist
Sioux Cumming
Programme Manager, Journals Online, INASP
UK
Getting your content in front of your users is one of the most difficult things to achieve. Making sure your journal is included in one of the major databases used by researchers and authors is very important for increasing your journal’s visibility. Four of the major indexes will be considered in this session and we invite participants to share their experiences of applying for inclusion in these indexes.4.30 pm - Presentation of Mementos to Resource Persons
